With Less Than One Month Until Tax Day, The City of Newark and the Newark Asset Building Coalition Reminds Eligible Residents to File Their Taxes for Free

Newark, New Jersey — The City of Newark along with the Newark Asset Building Coalition (NABC) reminds Newark residents that there is less than one month to file taxes before the April 17th deadline. Newarkers across the five wards who earn $54,000 or less; are encouraged to file their taxes at one of 11 Free Tax Prep sites located throughout the City. When filing at one of these sites, individuals can take advantage of all possible tax benefits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Expansion to eleven Free Tax Prep sites throughout Newark in 2018 is an initiative of the Newark Asset Building Coalition (NABC). NABC is working to promote financial independence and stability for Newarkers, and provide them with financial education, access to wealth-building programs, and extended services around personal finance. The Steering Committee is made up of key Newark-based stakeholders including: United Way of Essex & West Hudson, New Jersey Citizen Action, New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, Newark Alliance, The Prudential Foundation, La Casa De Don Pedro, Urban league of Essex County, and New Community Corporation. NABC is funded by The Prudential Foundation, with support for the Free Tax Prep site expansion provided by Citi Community Development.

Throughout the tax season, Newark’s Free Tax Prep sites include more than 100 volunteers working at eleven locations city-wide. Newark residents can call 211 or visit www.uwewh.org/vita and view a directory to search for the most convenient free tax sites. This year the City’s network of free tax preparation providers opened 11 sites, with locations in every ward, in an effort to better serve Newark residents in communities identified as being in need of free tax preparation services and likely eligible for tax credits.

“With Tax Day quickly approaching, we encourage all eligible Newarkers to use our services to file their taxes safely and for free and to ensure you are maximizing your refunds by claiming the tax credits you’re entitled to,” said President & CEO of United Way of Essex & West Hudson, Catherine P. Wilson. “We know that many Newark residents need to stretch every dollar to take care of themselves and their families – or even add to their savings, which is why they shouldn’t have to pay for tax preparation services if they don’t have to. By ensuring that our hardworking families aren’t leaving any money on the table this tax season, we hope to help create thriving communities across the city.”

“We are deeply committed to building an inclusive economy in Newark that empowers our residents with living-wage jobs and the tools and resources they need to build family wealth over time,” said Mayor Ras A. Baraka, City of Newark. “That is why the City of Newark is an enthusiastic partner in the Newark Asset Building Coalition. Newarkers’ opportunity to start building assets starts now with free tax preparation, and the City of Newark is helping to expand these services by opening the doors of Centers of Hope in targeted neighborhoods. Refunds generated from this effort will literally put millions of dollars into the pockets of Newark families to build savings and to spend at Newark’s many wonderful small businesses.

“Since our founding more than 140 years ago in Newark, Prudential has been committed to creating pathways for economic mobility, particularly for underserved populations,” said Kimberly Ostrowski, senior director, corporate giving, Prudential Financial. “It is this commitment that led us to support the expansion of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which provides free tax preparation services to low- and moderate-income families and individuals. We see this partnership as an important step in helping create inclusive economic growth for the City of Newark and its residents.”

“For many low-income New Jersey families, the Earned Income Tax Credit represents up to 20% of their annual household incomes, said Phyllis Salowe-Kaye, Executive Director of New Jersey Citizen Action. Unfortunately, the families that have the least to spend are those who are most aggressively targeted by high cost tax preparers and tax scam artists, making free tax preparation services like those offered by NJCA and other NABC Free Tax Prep sites so critical to the financial health and well-being of Newark families.”

“For eligible New Jersey workers, free tax preparation and access to the Earned Income Tax Credit can help provide a vital cash infusion,” said Eileen Auld, New York Tri-State Market Manager, Citi Community Development. “Citi’s collaboration with the United Way of Essex and West Hudson on the expansion of the Free Tax Prep program is enabling more people to gain access to high quality tax preparation services and receive the full roster of tax credits they have earned.”

To help ensure a successful filing experience, eligible taxpayers must bring the proper documents with them to the Free Tax Prep location, including a copy of last year’s tax return, driver license(s) or state-issued ID, Form W-2, and Social Security numbers. Review a full list of documents to bring on the United Way website at www.uwewh.org/vita.
